“… the role of HERS is to unambiguously prepare women for leadership. It’s not about just training courses but it’s actually looking at ensuring that people advance, that women advance…and…the (ACADEMY)… has become a dedicated programme that ensures that …(women)… have skills and competence in all the areas that are required of leaders in higher education.”(Minister Naledi Pandor – 12th  September 2012.)

These are the words echoed by HERS alumna and the Department of Science and Technology’s Minister Naledi Pandor when she delivered her Keynote address at the 10th HERS-SA ACADEMY in 2012.  The thirteenth ACADEMY took place on Sunday 9th September to Friday the 11th September 2015 at the Double Tree by Hilton, Upper Eastside Hotel in Woodstock, Cape Town.

The HERS-SA ACADEMY, the only residential event of its kind in South Africa, focuses exclusively on women who currently are in senior management positions in higher education institutions, or those who aspire to occupy senior leadership positions.

The ACADEMY was first offered in 2003, and since then this event has grown in numbers and stature and has become a national and international event.  Pictured below are the seventy six delegates who attended the 2016 ACADEMY representing 15 South African Higher Education Institutions.

The ACADEMY consists of a carefully crafted programme comprising plenary sessions in the mornings, break-away group activities, and workshops during the afternoon.  Delegates were encouraged to shape their own programme by choosing afternoon workshops that they believe will most benefit their careers. Feedback received from delegates after each ACADEMY has assisted in fine-tuning this event, and suggestions are incorporated into the programme each year to ensure that it meets the professional and leadership development needs of women attending the programme.  “Through its ACADEMY , HERS-SA annually provides women with the resources needed to challenge hostile environments while also being able to recognise and seize opportunities for career advancement”, states Director Dr Sabie Surtee.
