DR NAZIEMA JAPPIE

Dr. Naziema Jappie is a visionary leader in education, widely recognized for her
passion for innovation and commitment to student success. With over 30 years

of experience in educational leadership, she has championed inclusive and

transformative teaching and learning environments. Her career spans roles as a
secondary school teacher, National Education Officer at COSATU, and lecturer
at the former M.L. Sultan Technikon, where she later became Dean of Students.
She held leadership roles at the University of the Witwatersrand and Durban
University of Technology before joining the University of Cape Town.

 

Dr. Jappie holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Johannesburg.
Her research and publications focus on social justice, diversity, equity, and
inclusion in higher education. She has received numerous accolades, including
the NRF and Ford Foundation awards for research in higher education, a
Fellowship in Labour Studies at the University of Iowa, and the Emerging
Research Scholar Award from Queens University, Belfast.

 

Her international academic engagements include visiting scholar positions at
Rutgers University (USA) and teaching roles in Pakistan, Brazil, China, and the
United States. A strong advocate for equity, she promotes inclusive policies that
ensure access to quality education for all students, regardless of background.

Dr. Jappie serves on various boards and editorial committees, including as
Regional Editor for the Journal of International Students. She is also a Fellow of
the Nippon Foundation, Japan. Guided by her belief in the transformative power
of education, she continues to inspire and empower learners worldwide.
